Old R-22 systems were much more forgiving if a duct system wasn’t sized exactly right. Newer systems run on 410-A or other refrigerants, and are much less forgiving. It is very common for return air to need an increase in size and volume on newer systems. If someone isn’t bringing this to your attention, you might want to question how well they are designing the system.
